Valentine’s Day Classroom Toys: Thinking Beyond the Junk
Do you like having toys to go along with Valentine’s Day cards your kids pass out at school? I do too. What I don’t love is that most of those toys end up being junk.
That’s why I love pairing everyday toys with Valentine’s Day cards in a smarter way—and today I’m sharing my favorites.
Why Toys Are the New Classroom Valentine Trend
Food isn’t allowed in most classrooms anymore because of allergies and sugar restrictions. Over the last five years, toys have become the go-to classroom Valentine.
Parents also want to stand out. Let’s be honest—being the “cool parent” feels good. Pinterest proves it.
The problem? Most Valentine toys break quickly or lose appeal within days.
So I asked myself: What everyday toys can become great Valentine’s gifts with just a little creativity?
Mini Collectibles That Work
Mini Furby collectibles from Hasbro are small, cute, and highly collectible. Pair one with a simple baggie and a card that says “You’re Furbulous” or “You’re Unforgettable.”
Even my 13-year-old approved—and that’s saying something.
Trading Cards as Social Valentines
Trading cards are another great option. Especially the Disney Lorcana Trading Cards from Ravensburger. You can gift a few cards together so kids can start collections, trade at recess, and interact socially.
Add a card that says, “I wouldn’t trade our friendship for anything.”
LEGO Valentine Play Prompts
Instead of themed LEGO sets, use random bricks.
Include a play prompt like:
“Build something you love.”
Kids can share creations at recess or online if they’re older.
Slime Without the Candy
Slime packaged in fun containers gives kids that candy-like excitement without sugar. Even better, the container can be reused long after the slime is gone, which is why I love the Cookie version from Orb Toys.
Craft-Based Valentine Activities
Paint-your-own suncatchers from Horizon Group allow kids to personalize their Valentines. It becomes an activity and a gift that can hang in a bedroom window.
Repurposing Advent Calendars
Advent calendars often include 24 individual items, which are perfect for classroom Valentines. The MiniBrands mini book advent calendar from Zuru works especially well with phrases like “Our friendship has great chapters ahead.”
Board Game Pieces as Valentine Gifts
Think outside the toy box. Many board games contain multiple small pieces that can be gifted individually.
The Bug Mashup Game from Talking Tables works great for playful Valentine puns and creative prompts like naming or storytelling.
Valentine Ideas for Older Kids
For older kids, What Do You Meme Family Edition from family-friendly games like Relatable can be repurposed into Valentine mashups. Kids can swap, remix, and create new combinations during free time.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need Valentine-themed toys to create meaningful classroom gifts. With a little creativity, everyday toys can become playful, thoughtful Valentines kids actually enjoy.
